As the most experienced residential solar installation team in Nevada, Bombard Renewable Energy is focused on providing property owners with energy savings. With over 30 years of experience, we’re proud to offer the most reliable and affordable solar products available.
Wondering what the solar panel installation process is actually like for homeowners? We (BRE) recently talked to Steve Rypka (SR), one of our residential clients, about what his solar home experience has been like. Read on to see what he had to say.
BRE: Can you tell us a little bit about why you made your home a solar home?
SR: I’ve always had an interest in renewable energy, or at least I have for decades. In 2000, we purchased our first hybrid vehicle, a Prius. I started looking for more ways to reduce our carbon footprint. When I heard about NV Energy’s new rebate program it seemed like the perfect opportunity to continue reducing our footprint. I applied for the rebate in 2004 and my solar panels were installed in May of 2005.
BRE: What was your solar panel installation process like?
SR: The installation process was painless. Bombard did a survey of our home and provided a quote. Once they started installing the solar panels it only took a few days. The process did involve getting permission from our homeowner’s association because I was one of the first – if not the first – person in our community to install solar.
In the past, getting solar panels on homes was a challenge in Nevada because a lot of HOAs were opposed to rooftop solar. I went to my HOA with a list of all the things they required, including information about the location, equipment, and materials that would be used. I went in with a positive attitude, and it worked out really well. Bombard handled all other aspects of the permitting process.
BRE: What has surprised you the most about renewable energy since making the switch?
SR: The most surprising thing is that it has been zero maintenance. I anticipated at least some maintenance, though not a lot.
It’s kind of funny because when the system was first installed, it was brand new and shiny. Then I began to see a thin film of dust. I thought, “Oh my gosh, it’s blocking the sun!” I went up on the roof and washed them off with the hose.
Then I started monitoring the system to see how much it was affected when left alone. The bottom line is, I could never tell the difference between when it was clean or if it just had some dust. Occasional rain showers wash them often enough. Since the first couple months, the panels have not been touched. That was over twelve years ago.
BRE: What advice do you have for homeowners who are on the fence about using solar?
SR: Solar has become so affordable. It’s a great investment. I’m not a firm believer in leasing systems. Set aside a little money every month until you’re ready to purchase your system. You’ll get the best return on your investment and along with energy efficiency, it’s one of the best investments you can make.
It can really increase the return on the investment if you pair rooftop solar with a plugin hybrid or electric car. It almost doubled our ROI. It’s one of the best feelings in the world to drive on sunshine using fresh energy. Solar is the freshest energy you can get since it only takes eight minutes to get from the surface of the sun to my roof. Living more in alignment with the natural systems of our planet and helping to protect it is very satisfying.
Our investment in solar paid for itself years ago. In the long run, it’s the best way to go.
BRE: How has your experience with Bombard residential solar energy been?
SR: Bombard is the best choice for rooftop solar in Nevada. I’m familiar with several solar companies in our area. Many of them have come and gone. Bombard is rock solid and dependable. When you have a system with warranties of two decades or more, it’s important to buy from a company that’s going to be around. I know Bombard will be.
In my experience, Bombard is honest, fair, and comes from integrity. It’s the people there that really make the difference. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing several of them over the years, and that’s really what it comes down to. They are extremely knowledgeable and experts in their craft. Some of the people who work at Bombard Renewable Energy actually train other electricians, even those who may work for other companies. They are very involved in education and committed to doing it the right way. I really respect that.
At Bombard Renewable Energy, we know we wouldn’t be where we are today without our amazing clients. It’s people like Steve that help us stay motivated to keep encouraging others – like you – to consider investing in renewable energy.
